ORGANISATIONS

Fortune favours the bold. Pledge to have your organisation strive for a sustainable Highlands.

We acknowledge that nature contributes to our wellbeing and quality of life and that it shapes our cultural heritage and landscapes. Pressures on the natural environment, from climate change and biodiversity loss are a threat to our health, as they damage the systems that protect our wellbeing.

By signing this charter we demonstrate from this moment on our commitment to Highland becoming a region where:

  • Businesses, public bodies & third sector organisations are fully engaged in making a just transition towards net zero and supporting a climate ready Scotland.

  • Our responsibility to care for the natural environment is recognised and acted on, so that our habitats, ecosystems and species are diverse, thriving, resilient and adapting to climate change

  • The natural environment is valued as essential for people’s health and wellbeing. Individuals and communities are able to connect with and enjoy nature wherever they live.

We pledge to take at least one action that will keep Highland in good health for climate, nature and people, and to report back each year on how we are meeting that commitment.

These actions may include:

  • Reduce your environmental impact through sustainable business practices. Set targets on energy efficiency, renewables, waste and water.

  • Enhance biodiversity through gardening, growing, re-wilding and greenspace initiatives in the places you work and the communities you work with. Including bringing nature indoors

  • Connect with nature by taking organisational activities outdoors, or by bringing nature into the workplace; Promote encourage and signpost green health opportunities to staff, volunteers and the communities you serve.

  • Prepare your organisation or group for the impact of changing climate; future proofing your organisation and the communities in which you work by building resilience.

  • Promote everyday journeys by foot or bicycle and/or improve infrastructure and information to encourage staff and volunteers and those we serve to make active travel choices or avoid the need to travel.

  • Nurture and strengthen the links between communities groups focused on climate, nature and health

  • Grow your knowledge of climate, nature and health issues by signing up to newsletters, attending events and joining campaigns. Include these within the learning and development opportunities of your staff and volunteers.

  • Share, contribute to and collaborate in climate conversations and raise awareness through creative engagement, case studies and provision of information.
